Chapter 738: Chapter 246: Unexpected Gains, Inner City Construction Team!_3

“What about Lu Xin?” Cheng Ye asked again.

“She’s fine,” Su Xiu paused for a moment, forcing a smile, “After the flower shop closed, I wanted to hire her to help out. But she applied for a position at the broadcasting station, and I heard she’s doing well there, about to become permanent soon.”

“Oh.” Cheng Ye nodded, understanding.

He didn’t have lingering feelings for his former self, just didn’t expect this kind of ending.

As they spoke, footsteps sounded in the hallway, followed by the sound of a key turning in the lock.

Wang Kang strode in and, seeing Cheng Ye in the living room, beamed with delight: “Hey, Brother Cheng, you’re finally out… finally finished the mission!”

He spoke hurriedly, nearly saying “discharged,” but luckily Cheng Ye gave him a sharp look, prompting him to quickly correct himself.

“Xiao Ye, you two chat, I’ll check the kitchen.” Su Xiu neatly made space and turned to the kitchen.

However, Wang Kang pulled Cheng Ye into another bedroom, closed the door, and asked anxiously, “Brother Cheng, are you alright? Have you suffered these past few days?”

“I’m perfectly fine, in better shape than you.”

Cheng Ye leaned against the head of the bed and picked up a nearby comic book, flipping through it casually, “Why didn’t you wait for me to be discharged together?”

“Don’t even mention it, lying in the ward every day felt like prison, so boring.”

Wang Kang dragged a chair over to sit down, wearing a look of disdain, “So many people around to care for, anything I want to eat is available, all sorts of entertainment, but I just couldn’t stay.”

“Isn’t peaceful life good?” Cheng Ye raised an eyebrow.

“Not good! I’m about to go crazy!” Wang Kang pouted, “All I can think about now is Dapo Town. I don’t know what’s happened with the residents; I’ve asked for several days but haven’t gotten any definite news.”

“Don’t worry, they’ve all been arranged for treatment at the medical center. They were just mentally disturbed by Immortal Objects, a bit of rest will do, and they’re not like us,” Cheng Ye said softly.

Watching Wang Kang’s eagerness for “adventure,” Cheng Ye suddenly felt a bit sentimental.

Times have changed; even intern inspector Wang Kang finds peaceful days boring now.

It made Cheng Ye think of a saying: Life’s journey is an adventure.

Peaceful life is like copying and pasting the previous day, indeed no longer suitable for these inspectors.

Cheng Ye picked up the water cup by the bedside and took a sip, suddenly remembering something: “By the way, that Lin Xu…”

“That… Lin Xu?”

“He’s my dad!” Wang Kang replied without hesitation, seeming quite pleased with Cheng Ye’s shocked expression, adding with a hint of triumph, “My mom’s new find, quite a nice person, takes special care of her.”

“Cough… cough… your dad?” Cheng Ye nearly spat out the water.

“Yes! My mom’s only forty-five, still has decades ahead, can’t live alone.”

Wang Kang explained earnestly, “Uncle Lin is an architect at the Inner City Public Works Bureau, has a stable job, and is very considerate. At least compared to my biological dad Wang Cheng who went missing for four or five years, he takes better care of people.”

Speaking of Wang Cheng, his tone inevitably carried a hint of resentment.

Cheng Ye was silent for a moment, nodding gently, refraining from judging the matter further.

Wang Cheng is already dead, Su Xiu doesn’t need to cling to the past, finding someone they can mutually care for is perfectly reasonable.

He changed the subject: “Aunt Su said Lu Xin went to the broadcasting office, is that true?”

“Umm…” Kang hesitated, his expression suddenly darkening, his voice lowering, “Brother Cheng, she didn’t make it, she’s gone.”

“During the Stand-In Starfish disaster?”

“Yes, too many fusion bodies rushed in that night. Over a hundred people died in Inner City. She and the flower shop owner didn’t escape, met with unforeseen disaster.”

Cheng Ye paused, finally sighing, only uttering four words, “Timing and fate.”

When a person dies, the light goes out.

Matters of life and death are not new on the wasteland; he didn’t mention visiting to pay respects.

Perhaps since the moment the former self stepped out of Happiness City’s doors, they had silently acknowledged this life would never meet again, dwelling on the past now is redundant.

Let bygones be bygones.

Seeing Cheng Ye’s somber expression, Wang Kang quickly changed the topic: “Are we leaving the city for Dapo Town tomorrow?”

“Let’s leave in the afternoon. I have some business at the research institute in the morning.”

Cheng Ye nodded, naturally steering the conversation, discussing future plans for Dapo Town.

Hearing that they would partner with Luokuke for town guard duty, Wang Kang showed no dissatisfaction and instead nodded excitedly: “That’s great! With a third-stage inspector stationed there, I’ll feel much less pressure!”

“Don’t you want to come run around the Wilderness with me?”

“Not going!” Wang Kang shook his head, his tone very genuine, “I’m too weak now. I’d only be a burden if I went; seeing the sights wouldn’t help. Director Miao said to wait until I develop a Martial Body and master Tiger Power first. Only with those can I walk the Wilderness alone.”

Cheng Ye was a bit surprised, not expecting Wang Kang to have such clarity of thought, proving more mature than anticipated.

“Alright, my trip won’t take too long; including travel, it’ll just be two months.”

At this moment, Su Xiu’s voice came from the living room:

“Kang, Xiao Ye, the meal’s ready, come wash your hands and eat!”

“Alright!” The two stood up, washed their hands with soap in the restroom. Lin Xu had already set the dishes on the table.

Two plates of homemade dishes, cold potato strips, chili and chives, and a steaming pot of noodle stew, evoking the taste of home.

“I’m originally from Guang Province, moved to Happiness City a few years ago. I know some home-style cooking, hope you don’t mind,” Lin Xu smiled, handing over chili oil and vinegar.

Cheng Ye picked up a serving of the noodle stew; the flavor was just right, no extra seasoning added.

It must be said, after eating the exquisite meals at Rebirth Medical for a few days, this simple homemade food felt exceptionally comforting.
