Chapter 737: Chapter 246: Unexpected Gains, Inner City Construction Team! (Part 2)

The iron gate at the main entrance was open, and the neon sign of “Happiness Garden” made of artistic characters was still flashing.

This was considered one of the earliest communities in the Inner City and was where Cheng Long and Wang Kang grew up.

After getting out of the car, Cheng Ye’s gaze instinctively swept over, and the room on the sixth floor where Cheng Long used to live was lit up, presumably allocated to someone else after he became an Inspector.

He then looked towards the side of the neighborhood, and the place that should have housed the “Happiness Flower Shop” in his memory had now become the “Velvet Handmade Clothing Shop.”

The girl who once worked at the flower shop and had a relationship with Cheng Long was long gone.

“Now even the last traceable memories are gone.”

Cheng Ye sighed softly.

Even though it was a place where Cheng Long lived for over a decade, he felt no familiarity when he came back, as if he had never set foot here before.

The floating memories seemed like an unreal dream, dimly familiar yet overwhelmingly strange.

Carrying a bag of fruit, Cheng Ye walked towards Building 4, Unit 1, following the route in his memory.

The Inner City had excellent security, and there were no basic safety facilities downstairs. He walked all the way to the third floor and stopped in front of Room 301, knocking gently on the door.

At the sound of the knock, a series of hurried footsteps could be heard from inside.

Cheng Ye couldn’t help but pull a slight smile, but when the door opened, the unfamiliar face that appeared inside made him pause.

A man around forty years old, wearing black-framed glasses, a crisp white shirt, and work trousers, appeared competent yet somewhat reserved.

“Who are you?”

“Who are you?” both of them said in unison.

Cheng Ye leaned over to confirm the door number and asked, “Where’s Wang Kang?”

“You are…”

The man was initially stunned, but upon seeing Cheng Ye adjust his collar and his facial features returned to their original state, he immediately realized, “Are you Inspector Cheng?”

“Do you know me?” Cheng Ye raised an eyebrow slightly.

The man gulped and nodded quickly, “I’m Lin Xu, an architect from the Inner City’s Public Works Bureau. Please come in, Inspector Wang just went out and should be back soon.”

As he spoke, a woman in her forties came out of the house.

When she saw Cheng Ye, she was stunned at first, and then she spoke, almost in disbelief, “Ye?”

“It’s me, Aunt Su.”

Cheng Ye smiled and pulled the door open wider. Now his size nearly filled the entire doorframe, like a steady beast, carrying an aura of dominance.

Even though he consciously restrained himself, Wang Kang’s mother, Su Xiu, was still taken aback, “How did you get so strong?”

“I trained while on duty outside; after all, the Wilderness is dangerous, and you need strength.” Cheng Ye spoke kindly.

Lin Xu was the first to react, hastily taking the fruit bag from Cheng Ye’s hands, “Inspector Cheng, please sit down. I was just about to cook, and you came at the right time to try my cooking skills today.”

“Cooking?”

This unfamiliar term made Cheng Ye slightly puzzled, but after entering the house, he found a lot of vegetables piled on the floor, along with two bags of flour and two bags of rice.

“These are all brought back by Kang. He said that these fresh foods would be promoted in the future, starting from the Inner City, so that we don’t just drink Nutrient Paste all the time.”

Su Xiu smiled broadly, her eyes squinting in happiness, “I thought you two went out like his father, not coming back for years at a time, and didn’t expect to meet again after just a few months.”

“It’s good luck to gain appreciation from above; I can come in often to see you in the future.”

Cheng Ye looked around. Wang Kang’s home hadn’t changed much, still the same two-bedroom, two-hall layout, but the shabby chandelier and old sofa were replaced, and the floor had been redone, exuding a vibrant living atmosphere.

“Hey, Ye, you all have to prioritize work, can’t always think about coming back.”

Su Xiu pretended to lecture seriously, “Kang’s father, the Fourth-stage Inspector, doesn’t even get to come in and see us once in four to five years. You haven’t even passed the probationary period and can’t get complacent and spoiled just because of the superior’s favor.”

The more she said this, the more Cheng Ye felt that the Inspectors who followed Cheng Long were truly ruthless.

They simply abandoned their families and children, hardly caring, working hard outside solely for their own goals.

“But you’ve grown quite a bit, Auntie fear’s that the sweater I knitted for you won’t fit anymore.”

Suddenly remembering something, Su Xiu turned around to fetch a large bag from the bedroom and poured out four sweaters of different colors.

These were clearly knitted for his previous physique, and the texture of the yarn was delicate.

“This yarn was shipped back from Sand Province, and it’s very high quality. I originally planned to knit these before winter, so Uncle Lin could have someone bring them to you; the clothes in the Buffer Zone are both expensive and poor in quality.”

She pulled Cheng Ye up, holding a smaller-sized sweater against him, “The red one is for the New Year, shows color; the brown one is for meeting your superior, looks formal… Don’t worry, Auntie will measure your size later, and I’ll go to the store to unravel and re-knit it tomorrow, ensuring it’s ready before winter so that you have a change.”

Su Xiu chattered on, sometimes comparing colors, sometimes adjusting the collar position, making no distance because of Cheng Ye’s current status and physique changes.

Cheng Ye cooperated with the fitting, gazing at himself in the mirror. The last trace of violence left by high-intensity training in his eyes gradually faded away, becoming especially gentle.

After the comparison, Su Xiu fetched a tape measure and measured his current height, shoulder width, and waist circumference.

“Oh, you’re 191 cm tall now, almost catching up with your dad’s height.”

“Aunt Su, the velvet handmade clothing shop at the entrance, is that your shop? Did you take over the previous flower shop?” Cheng Ye suddenly asked.

“Oh, you saw it?” Su Xiu nodded quickly, “I just took it over less than a month ago. The previous flower shop owner was too unlucky, during the Stand-In Starfish disaster, when an Infected Body stormed in, the shop couldn’t be opened anymore.”
