Chapter 788: Break

Damon froze. For a split second, even the pain seemed to pause. “What…?” His breathing grew uneven as he stared at the chaos in front of him, his vision still flickering, but his mind had suddenly cleared just enough to grasp what had just happened.

Did he just absorb that attack? The attack that should have killed him fueled him instead?

The unexpected event created a spark of clarity in his mind. Damon clenched his teeth, holding onto that single thread of clarity with everything he had left.

“Of course…” he muttered, his voice trembling. His head was so muddled before that he did not think to try this but now he was ready.

His gaze dropped to his body, to the countless silver runes covering him from head to toe, each one sealing away a part of his existence, each one dragging him closer to death. They didn’t look absolute anymore. They looked breakable!

Damon’s lips slowly curled upward. “I can do this…”

“I can actually do this.”

The upgraded devourer bloodline was already working. It was consuming everything that entered his body, attacks, poison, energy, and processing it into something usable. If he focussed this energy into the runes covering his body, he should be able to break them all one by one!

Damon sucked in a sharp breath, his chest tightening as pain surged again, trying to drown out his thoughts, trying to drag him back into delirium. He refused. He was not going down this time. “Focus…” he whispered.

His body trembled violently as he forced what little control he had left inward, guiding the chaotic energy within him toward the nearest rune. Just one. That was all he needed. One at a time. The energy collided with the rune.

Damon’s eyes widened as the rune flickered. “Yes…” A grin spread across his face, wild and desperate. “Yes, that’s it!” He pushed harder and harder, ignoring the pain, ignoring the screams of his body and ignoring the fact that he was still on the verge of death.

The energy surged again and this time the rune trembled. Then, it cracked. A faint fracture ran across its surface before it shattered silently, dissolving into nothingness.

Damon gasped. “Ha Ha…” a breathless laugh escaped him. “It works…” His eyes lit up with madness.

Around him, the old monsters were still fighting, still clashing, still trying to outmaneuver each other for the killing blow. None of them had noticed, none of them had realized that their prey was no longer dying.

Damon smiled as he focussed on the abundant mana all around him. Stray attacks were fine but there was no need for him to wait for that. If he wasn’t wrong, his mana absorption rate right now should be off the charts.

He forced his senses to stretch outward despite the pain tearing through him. The world around him was still filled with energy. Even if it was sparse in some places, even if it was chaotic from the ongoing battle, it was still there. And it was all for his taking.

“…Let’s test this properly,” he muttered under his breath.

The next moment, with everything he had, he sensed the mana around him and then willed for it to enter his body. Almost immediately, his command was obeyed. Thin streams of energy began to flow toward Damon, drawn in as if by an irresistible force. They spiraled around him, coiling inward before vanishing into his body.

The silver runes flared. Damon’s body jerked violently as pain surged again, sharper than before, but this time he did not panic. He focussed on the energy entering his body. His control over it was now a lot better than before. He was able to condense all of the mana into a single, dense stream that he forced toward the nearest rune with absolute focus.

The rune trembled. The silver markings brightened, as if sensing the incoming threat, as if trying to reinforce themselves against the intrusion.

Damon’s teeth clenched so hard that blood seeped from his gums. “Break…” he growled. The energy pushed forward. The rune pushed back. For a brief moment, the two forces reached a stalemate, locked in a silent battle right on his skin.

“Fuck it.” Damon sent in another bolt of condensed energy which instantly slammed into the same point without hesitation, stacking pressure over precision as the second stream collided with the first.

The rune shuddered violently. It could no longer hold up. It cracked and shattered completely.

A surge of power rushed back into Damon as that sealed portion of his existence returned, flooding his system with strength that felt both foreign and familiar at the same time. His fingers twitched, then clenched, the sensation returning with a painful rush.

“Ha…!” A ragged breath tore out of him as his body jerked. Just a little bit more. He just needed a little bit more.

Damon’s eyes burned with madness as he started pulling in more and more mana hungrily. The air around him distorted heavily as multiple streams of energy rushed toward him at once, spiraling faster, denser, more aggressive than before. The devourer bloodline roared silently within him, refining, compressing, and redirecting everything with terrifying efficiency.

The next rune didn’t stand a chance.

“Break.” Another part of his body came back.

One by one Damon began breaking all of the runes on his body in a frenzy. He was absorbing mana from the surroundings like a madman. Before long, he broke an entire section of runes on his body. But at the same time, his actions did not go unnoticed.

What had once been thin streams were now visible currents, drawn toward him from the battlefield, from the environment, even from the residual energy of the clashing elders nearby. How could experienced B rank powerhouses miss something like this?

One of the elders paused mid-strike, his expression tightening as he felt the sudden drain. His gaze immediately shifted towards Damon.

Old Cao followed his line of sight and froze.

Damon was no longer writhing on the ground like a worm. He was now kneeling, head slightly lowered. His body was still covered in silver runes, but far fewer than before.

And they were disappearing rapidly.

“That brat…” Old Cao’s voice dropped, disbelief creeping in. “He overcame his backlash?”

The next second, Damon lifted his head, his golden crimson eyes staring directly at the bunch of old men surrounding him.

There was a chilling calm in his gaze. Not the desperation of a dying man, nor the madness of someone pushed beyond reason, but a cold, controlled hunger that made even seasoned killers hesitate for a fraction of a second. It made everyone uncomfortable.

Without wasting any more time, the group of clan leaders decided to end their internal dispute. They did not dare to delay this any longer. Domains flared up around each and every single one of them as several powerful auras erupted.

One had the aura of a great tree, vast and ancient, its roots seemingly spreading across the entire world.

Another radiated a scorching inferno, flames coiling around him like living serpents, each flicker carrying enough heat to melt stone into nothingness.

A third stood within a domain of endless blades, invisible yet omnipresent, the air itself slicing apart as if existence had been reduced to countless cutting edges.

One by one, their domains unfolded. The land trembled. The sky cracked. The world couldn’t hold under the weight of ten fully unleashed B-rank powerhouses.
