Summary
Marvin’s first impression of his new life is not a particularly good one.
The body he wakes up in is weak, constantly ill, and attached to a noble title that seems to bring more problems than privileges. The family’s territory has already slipped from its control, allies are difficult to find, and even the servants appear uncertain about what the future holds. For most people, inheriting such a situation would feel less like good fortune and more like being handed responsibility for a sinking ship.
The worst part is that Marvin recognizes the world around him.
The cities, the factions, the old rivalries, even some of the names being discussed in taverns and noble halls all feel strangely familiar. Unfortunately, familiarity offers little comfort when he lacks the strength to protect himself and the resources to solve even his most immediate problems.
Life becomes a constant balancing act.
A shortage of money leads to one problem, local disputes create another, and every decision seems capable of attracting attention from people far more powerful than he would prefer. Some days are spent searching for opportunities, others are spent avoiding trouble that arrives uninvited.
At the same time, rumors continue spreading across the land.
Most of those matters should have nothing to do with Marvin.
His immediate concerns are far less distant. The territory needs money, local affairs refuse to solve themselves, and there are always people waiting to take advantage of a young lord who looks incapable of protecting what belongs to him. Every day seems to bring another problem that requires attention, usually before the previous one has been dealt with.
Still, ignoring the outside world is easier said than done.
Merchants bring news from distant regions, travelers pass through with stories worth remembering, and occasionally a familiar name surfaces where Marvin least expects it. Whether he likes it or not, the troubles beyond his territory have a habit of drifting closer over time.
For someone who only wants enough breathing room to get his affairs in order, the world is proving remarkably uncooperative.
Especially when the future seems determined to refuse staying where it belongs.
