Summary
Mag Shen thought the biggest problem that day would be deciding which seafood dish deserved a perfect score. Instead, an accident at sea ended his life before he ever made it home. When he opened his eyes again, the expensive yacht was gone, replaced by a shabby little house and memories that clearly belonged to somebody else. The name attached to those memories was Mag Alex, once a respected knight whose life had fallen apart after a betrayal that left him with little more than debt and a young daughter to raise.
Trying to sort out another man’s past quickly becomes less important than dealing with the present. Amy, the cheerful half-elf girl calling him father, has no idea that the person standing before her is no longer the same man. She only knows they’re poor, dinner is never guaranteed, and her father is the only family she has left. Whatever happened to the real Mag Alex, abandoning her is never really an option.
The city they live in is unlike anywhere Mag remembers. Humans share the streets with elves, dwarves, demons, dragons and many other races, each bringing their own customs, tempers, and tastes. Old grudges have not disappeared just because peace was declared, so even an ordinary meal can become awkward when people who spent generations distrusting one another end up sitting a few tables apart.
Just when Mag begins wondering how he is supposed to feed himself and Amy, an unusual system decides that his future lies in the kitchen. It is hardly a reward. During his previous life he earned a reputation for brutally honest restaurant reviews, and now he is expected to build one of his own from the ground up. Every recipe has to be learned properly, every ingredient meets impossible standards, and shortcuts are treated almost like crimes.
Business is painfully slow at first, but good food has a strange habit of bringing unlikely customers together. Before long, a tiny restaurant tucked away in Chaos City starts attracting visitors that few people would expect to see sharing the same dining room. Proud dragons wait for empty seats, demons return for dessert, and elves quietly ignore their usual manners whenever their favorite dishes arrive. While Mag worries about tomorrow’s menu, he slowly realizes that changing people’s opinions can begin with something as simple as serving a really good meal.
