Summary
Lu Wu never expected the worst day of his life to end with an inheritance from the underworld. His career as a game developer has stalled before it ever truly began, his website is practically abandoned, and paying the next month’s bills feels more urgent than chasing impossible dreams. Then a mysterious girl named Bei Li appears and calmly informs him that he is the final heir of Beiqi, one of the twelve ancient domains of the underworld. The title sounds impressive until he discovers the truth. The kingdom collapsed long ago, powerful generals divided the land among themselves, and the throne he inherited is little more than a forgotten ruin guarded by memories of a fallen age.
Bei Li remains beside him because of an old promise made to his ancestor, though even she admits they have no realistic chance of defeating the forces that have ruled Beiqi for centuries. The only thing left behind is an unfinished artifact designed to forge immortal soldiers from wandering souls. It could have changed the fate of the underworld, except for one impossible requirement, it needs an endless supply of willing spirits before it can become the weapon it was meant to be.
That impossible condition sparks an idea only Lu Wu could come up with. Instead of searching the underworld for recruits, he disguises the artifact as the world’s first fully immersive virtual reality game and releases Battle Online on Earth. Players believe they are testing a revolutionary new title, spending hours hunting monsters, clearing dungeons, collecting rare equipment, and arguing over builds, completely unaware that every battle is happening inside the real underworld. Every death strengthens Lu Wu’s army, every victory restores another piece of his shattered kingdom, and every excited gamer unknowingly pushes an ancient war closer to its next chapter.
The story never hides where it is heading. Lu Wu is building an empire through gamers who think they are only chasing loot, while rival underworld factions slowly realize someone is reviving the forgotten ruler’s legacy. Kingdom building, strategy, comedy, and clever game mechanics come together in a world where the players remain blissfully ignorant, but the enemies watching from the shadows know exactly what is happening, and they have no intention of letting Beiqi rise again.
