Chapter 1158: Survival

The moment Macaco disappeared, the battlefield erupted.

Kaelra was the first to reach the Gorun army. Her enormous silver body descended upon the foremost ranks with enough force to shatter the ground beneath her, and the shockwave sent hundreds of bronze-skinned warriors tumbling through the air. Before they could recover, her claws swept across the battlefield, tearing through rows of Goruns as though they were nothing more than grass beneath a blade.

The sight immediately changed the atmosphere among the expedition.

They had expected a difficult battle, but the reality before them seemed almost laughable.

The Goruns were numerous beyond reason, yet their individual strength was nowhere near the level of the Saints standing against them. The difference was immediately apparent, and several of the leaders stopped holding back.

Kaelra’s daughters transformed beside her, their smaller dragon forms diving through the battlefield while torrents of silver flames washed across entire formations. The Griffon Chief spread his wings and rose into the sky, his body transforming into an enormous golden-black griffon before countless feathers hardened into blades of condensed Soul Force and descended upon the army like a storm. Every feather pierced several Goruns before embedding itself into the ground, leaving the battlefield covered in shimmering weapons.

The Naga Queen was even more devastating. Her body expanded into a colossal serpent, silver scales reflecting the crimson sky as she coiled across the battlefield. Her eyes flashed, and the space surrounding entire groups of Goruns distorted violently before crushing them beneath invisible pressure. The warriors attempted to resist, but their bodies simply collapsed under the weight of the distorted space.

The Astrals fought in an entirely different manner.

Sue remained suspended several hundred meters above the ground, her clock-like eyes rotating rapidly as countless temporal ripples spread around her.

Every movement of the Goruns became delayed, their attacks slowing before they could even be completed. Ork and Dream fought beside her, their control over time creating overlapping fields that caused entire sections of the battlefield to fall into different temporal states.

Some Goruns were trapped within accelerated time, their bodies aging through centuries in moments, while others became frozen in place, unable to complete even a single step.

The Essari followed with overwhelming displays of their own.

Their bodies radiated Essence and Soul Force simultaneously as enormous structures of intertwined energy formed above the battlefield. Spears of condensed power descended from the sky in waves, each impact generating an explosion large enough to erase dozens of Goruns at once. Their attacks were precise rather than wasteful, but there was little reason for restraint when the enemy seemed endless.

Even Evelyn finally stopped holding back.

She raised both hands toward the crimson sky, and the temperature across the entire battlefield plummeted. Frost spread across the ground in every direction before enormous pillars of ice erupted from beneath the advancing army. Thousands of Goruns were caught inside the frozen structures, their bodies becoming nothing more than silhouettes beneath layers of crystalline ice.

Marcus and Samuel joined her almost immediately, their attacks tearing through the remaining formations while the other Saints unleashed their own abilities. Fire collided with ice. Lightning tore through spatial barriers. Waves of Soul Force crashed against the earth with enough power to create new craters. Entire sections of the battlefield disappeared beneath overlapping explosions.

For several minutes, it felt less like a battle and more like an execution.

The Goruns continued advancing regardless.

They did not retreat.

They simply marched forward while their commanders unleashed attacks of their own.

A Saint-level Gorun raised its spear, and a massive wave of fire swept across the battlefield. Another commander struck the ground, sending dozens of enormous stone pillars erupting toward the expedition. A third opened a spatial rift that swallowed everything within several kilometers before collapsing with enough force to tear apart the surrounding landscape.

The attacks were powerful, but the expedition met them head-on.

Kaelra tore through one firestorm with her wings.

Evelyn froze another before it reached the formation.

Sue reversed the trajectory of a spatial attack and sent it crashing back into the Gorun ranks.

The resulting explosions merged together into a tremendous wave of destruction that rolled across the wasteland, flattening mountains and carving enormous trenches into the ancient battlefield.

I remained slightly behind the others, watching the battle unfold.

There was no reason for me to interfere yet.

Everyone had wanted to fight. Everyone had been confident in their strength.

So far, they had every reason to be.

Then the Goruns stopped.

It happened so suddenly that the change was almost more unsettling than the battle itself.

The endless army halted in perfect unison.

Millions of bronze-skinned warriors stood motionless beneath the crimson sky. For one strange moment, the entire battlefield became silent.

Kaelra landed several kilometers ahead of us, her enormous silver body covered in fragments of shattered bronze armor. She raised her head and stared toward the motionless army.

“What are they doing?”

Before anyone could answer, every Gorun opened its mouth.

A roar erupted across the battlefield.

It was not the roar of individual warriors.

It was one sound.

Millions of voices merging into a single deafening cry that shook the heavens and caused the ground beneath our feet to tremble.

Then their Soul Force exploded.

The sheer quantity was overwhelming.

Every Gorun released everything it possessed at once, and the countless streams of Soul Force immediately began flowing toward one another. Rather than colliding, they intertwined, forming enormous currents that moved through the army according to some unseen pattern.

My eyes narrowed.

“This isn’t an attack.”

The Soul Force wasn’t being wasted.

It was being organized.

The entire army was becoming a formation.

The commanders raised their weapons simultaneously.

The Soul Force surrounding them surged upward before connecting with thousands of soldiers below. One formation became another, then another, until the entire army was linked together through a vast network of energy that covered the battlefield.

Then the sky darkened.

Something enormous began taking shape above the Goruns.

At first I thought they were merely projections created by the Saint commanders.

Then another appeared.

And another.

And another.

Within seconds, thousands of gigantic Gorun projections had materialized above the army.

Each one towered over the battlefield, their bronze bodies surrounded by terrifying Soul Force. Their strength wasn’t comparable to the commanders themselves, but each projection possessed an aura that unmistakably belonged to a middle-level Saint.

Kaelra’s enormous dragon head slowly lifted toward them.

“…Saints.”

Her expression had changed.

I watched the formation carefully.

The Goruns weren’t simply combining their power.

They were multiplying it.

Thousands of projections were now standing behind the army, each one connected to a specific section of the formation. Every soldier was contributing a fraction of their Soul Force to the whole, and the result was something none of us had anticipated.

The first projection raised its spear.

Then thousands followed.

The sky suddenly became filled with weapons.

Wind condensed around one group of spears until enormous blades of compressed air formed along their edges. Lightning gathered around another formation, producing thousands of crackling spears that illuminated the crimson sky. Fire, ice, earth, darkness and spatial energy gathered around the remaining projections, each formation producing a different attack.

I felt the pressure change.

“Everyone, defend!”

My warning came at almost the exact moment the Goruns attacked.

Thousands of spears were launched simultaneously.

The wind spears arrived first, enormous blades of compressed air tearing through space itself as they crossed the battlefield. Lightning spears followed behind them, accompanied by torrents of fire and ice that transformed the sky into a storm of destruction.

The expedition’s previous confidence disappeared instantly.

Evelyn raised an enormous wall of ice.

Kaelra spread her wings and a large silver dome of soul force expanded over the dragons.

The Griffon Chief twisted through the sky as his feathers transformed into a massive defensive barrier.

The Astrals accelerated time around themselves while the Essari constructed layered shields of Essence and Soul Force.

Across the battlefield, every Saint abandoned offense and focused entirely on survival.

The first wave of spears struck.

The resulting explosion shook the entire wasteland.

My eyes narrowed as I watched the thousands of Gorun projections prepare their second attack.

The battle had changed and I understood why the Ruler had called this place a trial of Survival.

Creation is hard, cheer me up!
