Summary
The night before Su Li was meant to collect her prize, something strange happened. She didn’t even get to touch her reward before life flipped upside down. When she opened her eyes again, she was no longer herself but the wife of a poor hunter in a world that wasn’t hers. At first, she thought it was a dream, but the sore muscles and smoky air told her it was real. What made it worse was the family she had landed in. They were lazy, loud, and always arguing. Work was never done, money was always short, and trouble came knocking every few days.
Su Li didn’t want to keep living that way, so she agreed to whatever her mother-in-law demanded just to move out. Freedom came, but it wasn’t easy. The small house she got was cold and empty, and the rice jar was almost bare. Her husband disappeared into the mountains most days, hunting or pretending to. That left her and the children to handle everything.
What kept her from breaking down were her twins. They laughed even when the firewood ran out, and their bright faces reminded her why she had to keep going. She promised herself she would give them a better life no matter what it took. If fate didn’t want to help her, she would help herself.
She worked from dawn to dusk, planting and trading whatever she could. Slowly, she built something out of nothing. Her hard work shaped her children too. They grew up strong and clever. One day, one became a scholar praised by the emperor, and the other led armies as a great general. People forgot the poor woman who once struggled for a bowl of rice, but Su Li never did. Every success they had was born from the hunger, sweat, and hope she refused to let die.
