Summary
When He Yi walks out of prison, she doesn’t spend much time thinking about revenge.
She has more immediate problems.
No money, no family worth relying on, and a daughter she has been separated from for years. The world kept moving while she was gone, and it certainly didn’t leave a place waiting for her. People still remember her name, unfortunately not for reasons she would like.
Years ago, He Yi had the kind of life others envied. Her family was wealthy, her future looked secure, and marriage seemed only a matter of time. Then everything started falling apart. A bizarre incident left her carrying a child without knowing who the father was, her family suffered a series of devastating blows, and the man she trusted most somehow ended up standing on the opposite side when she needed him the most.
Prison was supposed to be the end of the story.
Instead, it became the part she survived.
Coming back is harder than leaving. Familiar places feel unfamiliar, old relationships have changed shape, and some wounds are still fresh no matter how many years have passed. He Yi tells herself that finding her daughter is all that matters, but the search keeps leading her toward people she would rather never see again.
That is where things become complicated.
The version of the past she has carried for years starts developing cracks. Certain events don’t make as much sense as they once did. Some people seem a little too eager to keep old matters buried, while others behave as if they are worried she might remember something she was never supposed to question in the first place.
The further He Yi digs, the less certain she becomes about what really happened.
What makes the novel interesting isn’t that He Yi returns as some unstoppable force. Most of the time she is tired, angry, stubborn, and trying to put together pieces of a life that was shattered long ago. She makes mistakes, acts on emotion, and occasionally walks straight into trouble because she refuses to leave things alone.
But that same stubbornness is also the reason she keeps moving forward.
Because somewhere between the lies, the betrayals, and the years that were taken from her, there are still answers waiting to be found. And some people have spent a very long time hoping she would never come looking for them.
