Summary
Fang Yuan’s been counting down the days until the sect kicks him out. Ten years he’s put into this place, walked in young and hungry, and his cultivation’s barely crawled forward while kids who showed up years after him have already left him in the dust. Every monthly test gets worse, people talk about him on the mountain paths now, and even the elders quit expecting anything out of him a while back. The final exam’s coming up fast, and if he doesn’t break through, he’s done, no more chances, no more sect.
He’s not walking away without a fight though. Every coin he’s got left goes into one Iron Skin Gu, his whole future riding on this one purchase, because failing means going home to nothing but ten wasted years and a bunch of promises he never kept. Odds don’t look great either way.
Then something happens that isn’t a breakthrough at all, it’s stranger than that. The Gu he bought just starts changing on its own, growing stronger whether he’s training or dead asleep, and nothing in the sect’s records explains why. He figures it’s a fluke at first, but the improvements keep stacking day after day until this ordinary Gu is doing things it has no business doing.
Hiding that becomes its own full-time problem. The stronger his Gu gets, the more it eats through, spirit herbs, beast blood, minerals from ruins nobody bothers exploring anymore, and every shortcut to faster growth drags its own danger along behind it. Missions he would’ve laughed off a year ago start looking doable. Places smart cultivators steer clear of start looking like opportunity instead.
One Gu turns into a whole collection soon enough, each one showing up through luck or a shady deal or something worse, and each with its own attitude. Some are built for fighting, some just quietly boost his cultivation, a few won’t even cooperate until he figures out exactly what they want first. Turns out raising Gu is nothing like hoarding treasure, you’ve got to feed them, train them, actually understand what makes each one tick before they show you what they can really do.
People eventually notice the guy they wrote off has stopped falling behind. Fang Yuan’s figured out something bigger than that though: his own talent hasn’t budged an inch, and his Gu don’t seem to care one bit, they just keep climbing, and every step they take, they drag him right along with them.
