Summary
If someone asked Shangguan Ning what family means, her answer probably wouldn’t be a pleasant one.
Growing up in a wealthy household never brought her the security that people imagine comes with money. Most of her memories are tied to disappointment, being treated as an afterthought, and realizing far too early that not everyone who calls themselves family actually cares about you. By the time she leaves China to study abroad, she is already exhausted from dealing with people who seem to want something from her every time they smile.
Coming back years later isn’t supposed to be emotional. She has a stable job, a routine, and enough distance from the past to convince herself that none of it matters anymore.
Unfortunately, the past rarely asks for permission before showing up again.
People she would rather avoid keep finding their way back into her life. Some want favors, some want opportunities, and a few simply cannot stand seeing her doing well. Old grudges that should have died long ago are still very much alive, and Shangguan Ning slowly discovers that certain individuals have learned absolutely nothing with time.
What I liked about her character is that she doesn’t spend hundreds of chapters crying over her situation. She gets hurt, sure, but she also gets angry. Sometimes she says the wrong thing, sometimes she acts out of emotion, and sometimes she refuses to back down even when backing down would probably be easier.
Then Jing Yichen enters the picture.
He isn’t introduced as some perfect prince charming who instantly changes her life. In fact, for a while he just feels like another problem. He comes from a level of wealth and influence that most people can barely imagine, carries himself like someone used to being obeyed, and has very little patience for nonsense. Their relationship starts awkwardly, stays complicated for quite a while, and honestly becomes more interesting because of that.
Around them are family feuds, business disputes, hidden agendas, jealous relatives, broken engagements, and all the drama you’d expect when powerful people start getting involved in each other’s lives.
At its heart, though, this is really the story of a woman who has spent years being let down by the people closest to her and slowly learns that not everyone who enters her life is there to hurt her. It just takes her a long time to believe it.
